From BooklistIf the idea of using canned feed to prepare meals without delay raises visions of cans of condensed cream soups and gloppy tuna-noodle casserole, Silverton and Carreno speedily dispel such uncouth culinary nightmares. They intent to simplify meal preparation through use of canned and boxed ingredients without resorting to the worst of processed foods. A jar of roasted peppers, a couple cans of tuna, a bunch of canned capers, and numerous fresh parsley compose a hearty cold salad. Canned beans, fresh herbs, and a great deal of shredded cabbage make a quick soup in the Tuscan tradition. Sauteed arugula crowns pork chops nestled on a bed of instant polenta and flavored with exotic, highpriced fennel pollen. Bottled lime juice and condensed milk make a quick tropical dessert. Nancy Silverton is one of the last chefs in the world I would have expected to write a cookbook that urges you to use prepared foods.

Fast food, gourmet style

If you’ve ever wondered what to do with pomegranate molasses or piquillo peppers, this book is for you.

For busy people who like to eat well, Silverton has scoured the grocery shelves for gourmet convenience items, like roasted red peppers, the new cartoned soups, jarred curry sauce, and tapenade to come up with dishes like Seared Tuna with Tomato-Olive Salsa, Peppered Skirt Steak with Spicy Tomato-Curry Garbanzo Beans and Tangy Greek Yogurt Sauce, and Chilled Corn Soup with Adobo Swirl.

Most of them take 30 minutes or less and all are designed to be one-dish meals.

There are lots of the usual pantry items too, like canned beans, sardines, capers, anchovies, etc., all used with flair and imagination.

The salad and pasta chapters are especially simple and different with dishes like Orecchiette with Peas, Prosciutto and Crème Fraiche, Pot Sticker and Vegetable Stir-Fry, Spinach Salad with Lentils and Crispy Warm Goat Cheese, and Cumin Shrimp and Garbanzo Bean Salad with Roasted Carrots.

Chicken salads are made with rotisserie chicken and tuna comes from a can (unless it’s seared), but all the dressings are homemade, as Silverton cannot abide the commercial ones.

Silverton suggests brands for many items and while most are locally available, she also provides a list of mail-order sources. A fine collection, suitable for enlivening the week night or serving to guests.

Rustic country decor and how to embellish cottage style homes are extensions of American country style decorating. In addition, traditions are borrowed from French, English and a heap of Swedish country looks. Rustic country decor may be specified as coarse, charmingly simple, unfussy, not finished and yet with lovable and childlike qualities. Rustic country embellishing includes the use of natural woods, aged surfaces, rough finishes and simple lines. Cottage style homes are comfortable, modest, quaint homes that may be made of thick stone or log wood.

Floors in rustic country decor and cottage style homes are made with stone or wood materials. Wooden floors were traditionally constructed with boards that were bare and merely waxed and hand-polished (high-gloss varnishes did not exist). Sometimes the boards were painted with light colors. If you like floor coverings, use oriental rugs and throws for visual warmth and color. Rustic country decor is in regards to handcrafted objects, simplicity, furnishings that you take pleasure in and connecting back to nature.

Rustic cottage furniture is ordinarily made with pine and perchance painted with hand-painted designs such as flowers, birds, animals, country scenery or leaves. Use ladderback chairs, rocking chairs, benches, wicker furniture and Windsor chairs. A big rectangular table made of pine is a good option for your kitchen or dining room table. To give your furniture a rustic look, brush a coat of paint on the furniture piece, then rub most of the paint off. After it dries, utilize wood stain unevenly for an older weathered appearance. It will be perfective and rustic looking!

Baskets may be employed to store wood, pine cones, flowers, plants and needlework. Brass candle holders, oil or kerosene lamps, sconces, hurricane lamps, tin lanterns, recessed ceiling fixtures or a vintage wrought-iron or metal chandelier provide successful lighting for rustic country decor and cottage style homes. Colors used in rustic country decor or cottage style homes are neutral tones ranging from white to bone, world tones, red barn, blues and greens.

For rustic country decor in the kitchen, use open shelves, hutches, buffets, plate racks and cupboards for storage. Often, country kitchen storage is crammed with stoneware pots, plain glazed earthenware and glass jars. Kitchen pots must be made of copper, steel or cast iron — cookware have a tendancy to be huge and plain. Use open shelving in the rustic country kitchen to display plates, dishes and dinnerware collections. Natural woods, light colors and bright fabrics work outstanding for window treatments. Adding a rustic butcher block island brings about a terrifi visual effect as well as provides utile functionality.

A rustic country decor bathroom has neutral tones or soft colored walls, antique-looking lighting, and wooden antiques or oldfashioned reproduction cabinets and vanity. Knowing how to decorate cottage style homes and bathrooms may result in creating a calm and refined and tasteful atmosphere. Clawfoot tubs, pedestal sinks, country style oldfashioned brass faucets and old-fashioned country cabinets provide the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to spend time there. Oil of oregano ~ natures immune system booster

I’ve had a paperback copy of this book for years and I’m so happy to see it available as an ebook. I travel alot and carry my Oil of oregano everywhere I go, it’s a great immune system booster that has many other uses as well, which are all mentioned in the book. This book does promote certain products but personally, for my needs, I only use the oil.

The book is great, but the Kindle version is terrible!

This book is informative and eye opening. Great info. The ebook on the other hand is horribly done! It’s so full of mistakes that portions of it are literally unreadable! And it is extremely difficult to find specific sections on how to treat the conditions it discusses. For instance, if you want to know how to treat a fungal infection, there are too many responses when you do a search for it, the index is completely useless, and the table of contents (which you can’t even link to directly) is almost completely useless. After all that you’ll need to find out how to treat a headache, but you can’t! I have encountered similar problems w/ other Kindle books, but I excused it because those books were free. I can’t believe I paid ten bucks for this nonsense! What a shame to do to such a good book.

Once you determine to alter out cabinet hardware you might find the style you pick won’t look that outstanding if you try and replace the knobs in the same spots that the old ones were in. Well what to do? You surely don’t want to go back to the same boring old hardware. Instead you need a better understanding of your choices for where to place knobs on a cabinet.

The most evident place to put a knob will be on a side opposite a hinge. The leverage allows you to open the door with almost no effort. This is outstanding for those that might have a disability limiting their grip strength. The only exception to this rule is if you have roll out bottom cabinets, you know, the giant drawer types. Those you’ll want to install the knobs centered on the cabinet to keep it from binding up on either side.

Well that gives you a rough idea of where to put the knobs but you in all likelihood need something a little bit more exact. Unfortunately there’s no magic formula for where to place knobs on a cabinet. It’s all going to come down to how the cabinets are designed and the size and shape of them and your kitchen.

There’s a trick you may use to figure out where to place the knobs without just randomly drilling a bunch of holes into the cabinet face and hoping for the best. Head out to the hardware store and pick up a little tub of plumber’s putty. Plumbers putty is a non-hardening compound that’s more or less tacky. You may pull off little dollops of it then use it to just stick the knobs to the cabinet.

Here’s what you’ll do.

Open up the tub of Plumber’s putty.

Pinch off a piece of putty with regards to the size of the tip of your thumb.

Roll it into a ball.

Take the cabinet hardware and press the putty onto the back of it. Now you may just stick the knob onto the cabinet face wherever you think it will look right. Repeat this for a couple of the doors so you may get an overall feel for how the knobs will look sitting in a row. You may reposition the knobs just by popping them off the cabinet face and sticking them back on in a new spot.

Once you’ve figured out the right look for the cabinet you’ll need to measure the knob offsets from the bottom and side edge of the cabinets. You may then use those measurements as a template for knob placement. Mark the offsets on each of the cabinets and double check to make sure they aren’t slanting up or down.

The last thing to do is attach the hardware. Just drill the holes in the cabinet and slide a bolt through the hole and tighten the knobs down onto it. It’s all a beauteous simple job. Where to place knobs on a cabinet is a wholly personal choice. You’ll know what looks right once you get the knobs in position.

Unfortunately for those who are well into their 40′s, having a strenuous physical workout is not actually a good idea anymore. Once you reach this age, it is in truth more difficult for you to keep off the excess pounds – but working out is not as easy as equated to when you were in your 20′s, either. This is because there’s a larger possibleness of your muscles fabricating micro-tears for the duration of a queer physical activity. Keep Track to Succeed!

This is pedometer is Consumer Reports #1 rated digital pedometer- and I can see why. It’s extremely light weight and really easy to use with just four big buttons on the front. Here’s a few of its best features:

-it can accurately senses steps in your belt, pocket, OR purse!
-it has a large display for the visually impaired
-it has a 7 day history so you can see progress (or lack of)
-it calculates calories and distance in addition to steps

I’d recommend this little device to anyone who wants to lose weight- just begin one day, and the next day, see if you can maintain or beat your previous step record. Now how easy is that?

So what DIDN’T I like about it? Not much. Perhaps the ONLY sort of negative thing I can say is that you will need a tiny screwdriver to open the back of it to put in the battery. Other than that, if you’re looking to increase your activity a little to improve your health, look no further. Also recommend The 5-Minute Plantar Fasciitis Solution if you have plantar fasciitis that interferes with your exercise.

Best of Breed: The Gold Standard Among Pedometers

Since getting attached to pedometers a couple of years ago, I’ve gone through at least a dozen–Digiwalkers, Oregon Scientifics, Omrons. Sometimes the clips would break (Digiwalkers have no spring clip), or the cover would snap off, or they would prove highly inaccurate, or they would be bulky, or they would be too “versatile” and intricate to be practical for someone who was simply looking to get in 10,000 steps for the day. For this reason, I recommended the Sportline 330 as a comparatively rugged, accurate, and inexpensive step counter that, if need be, could be replaced with minimal financial damage.

But recently I saw this “high end” Omron at Walgreen’s and thought I’d give it a spin. Its primary allure: it claims to be so sensitive that you don’t need to wear it on a belt or some other outer wear. Just drop it in your shirt pocket or purse and forget about it.

Guess what? The Omron people aren’t pulling your leg. This is indeed a very sensitive little machine that does what it says it will do, in addition to being fast, easy, convenient, and extremely durable. I decided to test it by walking 30-40 minutes with the Omron in my shirt pocket and the Sportline clipped to my belt. At the end of my walk the Omron and Sportline were within 80 steps of each other. Moreover, it was the Omron that gave me the extra steps (a bonus if you consider the amount of time it takes–practically 2 hours–to log the full 10,000 steps).

The only advanced feature I occasionally use is the memory bank. The device automatically resets to 0 steps while saving the previous day’s count in memory (for up to a week). Although I set the clock, I rarely use the other extra features–calorie counter, aerobic read-out, or even distance covered. I don’t even bother with things like entering stride length and attaching clips or necklaces. This particular Omron model rises above the field because of one thing: quality. It’s accurate, it’s easy and fast, and it’s dependable if not indestructible (I’ve sat on it, inadvertently sent it through the wash, dropped it into a bath-tub). It keeps going, as long as you do. If you have a shirt pocket and know how to read from one to 10,000, you’re on your way.

You can never have too many good pedometers, but this Omron makes it unlikely you’ll need another one any time soon. There’s no question in my mind that this is best of breed, the one that Tiger Woods would use even if he had to pay for it and realized no rewards other than the practical and motivational benefits of the device itself. At its current price, it’s probably the best buy on Amazon.

Great gadget! Makes you mindful of your activity levels.

I bought this gadget with the intent of monitoring my daily steps to get an idea of where I was currently to establish some sort of baseline so that I could get a reality check on my activity levels. I opened the box, read the easy directions, set up my personal step measurement (just measure off the distance of your 10 steps), and clipped it on my pants and forgot about it for the day. I was surprised to find out that a corpse could probably move around more during the day than me! Over the next 6 days, (this pedometer keeps track of 7 days of steps for you); I literally stepped up my game and went from 756 steps with NO aerobic exercise on day 1, to 7,880 steps with 30 minutes of nonstop aerobic exercise on day 3! Every day has been getting easier to achieve the 10,000 “normal” steps, and increasing the aerobic steps too (which are tracked separately). I can press the mode button, check out how many miles my steps translate to, kilocalories burned, aerobic steps, and compare it with the past 7 days as well. It has turned out to be even more fun than what I originally bought it for. I actually feel better, and the fun part is that I am trying to beat my own personal record from the previous day! This has been an eye-opening experience for me, and I keep this on or in my pocket all the time now, just to make sure I keep a mindful eye on my steps and aerobic activity for the day!

Just regarding everyone has heard of stun guns and how effective they are in providing self-defense-nonlethal self-defense I might add.
